Answer the phone with a smile even if they can’t see you, be clear, listen and answer with a correct vocalization. Today, with cell phones so integrated in our society, the answer is different: should the use of personal cell phones be allowed in the workplace?

Many workers have two cell phones in the company, the personal one and the one provided by the company for work use. Anyone could understand that the personal cell phone should only be used outside of work or on very specific occasions and the work one only for work purposes. However, the freedom of use of the different devices means that the line that separates one from the other is seen only when we see who pays the bills. In Spain the use of the telephone in the workplace is not legally regulated, and it is up to the policy of each company to establish its use.

And how is this established?

The logical thing to do in these situations is to appeal to the employee’s common sense and that things like answering a call while driving, even if it is a work call, should not happen under any circumstances. Within the framework of the law and according to article 20.3 of the Workers’ Statute, the company itself must regulate the use of the devices, and non-compliance with the rule is grounds for justified dismissal. However, it is also the company that must encourage the use of these practices through conciliatory policies as well as providing tools that facilitate the use, such as hands-free devices incorporated in vehicles. The possibility of incorporating the incorrect use of cell phones in occupational risk prevention courses is a good idea for every company. We are not only talking here about those jobs in which we use heavy machinery, but also those that work by objectives, those who are facing the public or in general any type of work since the use of the cell phone in a personal way can make our performance is lower or even that our actions are seen as disrespectful.
